Abstract

This essay offers a deliberately provocative reading of Palladio’s method as one of the earliest historically documented examples, and certainly the most extensively studied in computational research, of a design system based on explicit production rules, formalized since 1978 as a generative shape grammar. Starting from the structural analogy between treatise and dataset, the essay identifies the point at which the comparison breaks down: licence, understood as a reasoned departure from the rule, which in Palladio’s method is always a traceable interpretive act, never a statistical fluctuation without a discernible cause. On this basis, the essay argues that drawing in the humanist tradition functions as an eidetic and heuristic cognitive instrument, irreducible to mere output. It concludes by proposing a critical protocol for using generative systems and a pedagogical reversal, both grounded in the traceability of judgment. Dedicated to Universal Knowledge in the Age of AI, this inaugural issue brings together theoretical, historical, critical, and design contributions that examine Palladio’s legacy through the relationships between universal knowledge and local traditions, classical method and technological innovation, and rule and variation, taking drawing, measurement, and representation as critical instruments.
